Why I’m hoping Feast wins short animated film Oscar

Table of Contents

I’m working on my Oscar picks and while some are a struggling, this may be the first year that I have a definitive pick for the category “Short Film – Animated.” I’m really hoping to see Feast, the short film from Disney Animation Studios, take home the Oscar in this category.

When my tween daughter and I went to see Big Hero 6, we also got to see Feast, the short animated film from Disney Animation Studios. The short film that follows the life journeys of Winston, the adorable Boston Terrier, and his owner aired before Big Hero 6, through the meals that they consume.

First-time director Patrick Osborne got the idea for the film after using the app called “One Second Everyday” to take one-second clips of his meals for a year. Cool, huh? I love knowing how inspiration strikes these crazy creative folks. Here is 53 second peak at Feast:

I loved that it was a fully flushed out story – so much so that it didn’t feel “short” at all. The film itself is about six minutes long and when it was over, I found myself really wishing it was longer. There’s precious little dialogue in Feast, and you know it’s good when you don’t miss the words at all.

You know it’s really good when the only word you can get out at the end is “awwwwww.”

I admit it, I cried. Have your tissues handy, because it was just me and my daughter who found Feast to be very moving. “It remains hard to imagine anyone not getting choked up during this film,” says Collin Souter on RogerEbert.cFeast_(2014_film)_logoom.

My daughter and I also laughed. “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion,” said Truvy in Steel Magnolias and that’s true for me as well. I think that’s known today as “feeling all the feels” and this short does a great job of making sure you do just that.

Disney Animation started with short films, and this short carries on the tradition in fine form.

I’m hoping Feast wins short animated film Oscar. Right now it is the favorite in the category and I think it is well deserved. I’m hoping gets the golden statue.

Have you seen Feast? What did you think?
