I love holidays, and I’m all about mixing up the daily routine with some festive but easy and family-friendly seasonal fun. Even better is sharing the fun with those close to us, and a great way to do that during the Halloween season is by making and secretly giving BOO Kits.

I admit that when my daughter was little and we were surprised by a fun pail of treats left on our doorstep one morning, I was a bit confused. It took me a moment to realized that we had been BOO’d. It was early in the Halloween season, as it is now, and no one had explained this fun phenomenon to me. It didn’t take long, though, for us to figure it out and fall in love with this cute tradition, one that focuses on paying it, or BOOing it, forward.

BOO It Forward
I wanted to share this early so that you were in on BOO’ing and could join in the fun. Here’s how it works:

1. You make a Boo Bundle with fun treats and a “You’ve been BOO’d” cards.

* Include BOO cards, which you can find and print here.

Once you’ve printed them, fold the “You’ve been BOO’d” greeting card (page 2) and tape openings together. You can also add a fun note. My daughter wrote “You are BOOtiful!” for her friends. Cut out the “We’ve been BOO’d” sign and include that as well so the lucky family you BOO can just tape it on the window or door. Include the card and sign when gifting BOO bundles.

* Pick a fun container.

We are BOO’ing my daughter’s friends who are middle school girls. She thought that colorful pumpkins would be best. You can do everything from paper bags to baskets, whatever floats your boat!

* Add fun, yummy treats!

Given that it’s Halloween, candy is pretty much a given, right? We opted for the Chocolate Mix Fun Size that includes M&M’s®, SNICKERS®, and TWIX®.

We also thought that it would be nice to have something to wash down the candy and that the little 8 ounce Halloween cans were just too cute. My daughter’s friends all have different favorites, so we got 7UP® and Sunkist®

Halloween soda cans

We found everything we needed at Walmart. The candy bag was in both the candy aisle and in the front of the store as part of the huge Halloween display. The festive soda cans are in the soft drink aisle.

We found some fun make-up kits and included those in our BOO kits so the girls can use them for Halloween make-up if they wish. A few fun balls, glow sticks, spider rings and other inexpensive Halloween finery add to the fun.

2. Gift it, and do it in secret!

This may be my favorite part of BOOing someone. It’s just so fun to leave presents for people, and the secret aspect adds an element of excitement and surprise. It’s like a 007 mission for Halloween fun. And I love that the kids get so into it! It’s a fun way to talk about being generous and to experience the fun of giving in secret, without expecting anything in return. I also like the lessons that come with finding those who have not yet been BOO’d, and spreading the fun.

3. BOO it forward!

Once someone has been BOO’d, they are encouraged to BOO someone new. To spread it out, though, recipients place a “We’ve been BOO’d” sign in their window so you know to give it to someone who has not yet been BOO’d.

We've Been BOO'dIt’s so fun to see these signs around your neighborhood! You know what else is fun? Winning! Enter for a chance to win a $1,000 Walmart eGift card here!
