I love making holiday treats with my daughter because it gives us both fun, quality time together in the kitchen and the resulting treats give our kids a reason to stick around the house and be with us parents. I also love quick and easy recipes because when recipes are simple and fast, my kiddo and I can make more items.
That means we can share some milk and cookies together, and then share with others and spread some holiday cheer. It’s a great way for my daughter learn that it is better to give than to receive.
My new favorite recipe is a breeze to whip up and uses Pillsbury™ Funfetti® Holiday Cake Mix. No hunting all over the store for a lot of ingredients, and no measuring, either. These cookies are short on time needed to make them and long on yumminess.
Fast & Easy Holiday Cookie Recipe
Ingredients
1 (18.9-oz.) pkg. Pillsbury™ Moist Supreme™ Funfetti® Cake Mix
1/3 cup oil
2 eggs
Festive toppers (our favorites are M&M’s® White Peppermint and M&M’s® Hot Chocolate)
Directions
Heat oven to 375°F. In large bowl, combine cake mix, oil and eggs; stir with spoon until thoroughly moistened.
Shape dough into 1-inch balls; place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
Flatten slightly by pressing on balls with bottom of glass dipped in flour.
Bake at 375°F. for 6 to 8 minutes or until edges are light golden brown.
Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheets.
For the mixing, I used my KitchenAid Mixer which made things even speedier. If you don’t have one, or want to gift one, or just love them like I do, enter to win one here:
Note: If you should slightly overdo the cookies, leaving the bottoms browner than you’d like, fear not. Use your microplane and lightly grate the bottom of the cookie. It takes off the browned portion while still leaving your cookie intact. Not that I did that with my second batch this time. (Okay, fine, I totally did that.)
Once the cookies were done and cooled, we got to work decorating. First we frosted with Pillsbury™ Funfetti® Holiday Vanilla Flavored Frosting.
I love that they are pretty and festive, and that the vanilla makes a great base which means you decorate them with pretty much anything and any flavor you like. During this baking frenzy, we went topping crazy with a variety of M&M’s®: M&M’s® White Peppermint, M&M’s® Hot Chocolate, M&M’s® Holiday Peanut, and M&M’s® Holiday Peanut Butter.
We enjoyed a few of our creations – quality control, you know – as a snack with a glass of milk. It was a great opportunity to talk with my girl about how fortunate we are and that there are many hungry kids who miss out on milk, and essential nutrients it contains, because it’s not often donated to food banks.
Mom Fact: Milk contains 9 essential nutrients, including 8 grams of high-quality protein per serving and is the top food source of three of the nutrients most likely to be missing in the American diet – calcium, vitamin D and potassium.
Many don’t think to donate milk because it’s perishable, but thankfully the Great American Milk Drive, the first-ever national program to help deliver highly desired and nutrient-rich gallons of milk to hungry families who need it most, can change that, and you can help. It will deliver a gallon of milk to a family in need in your community for a small donation here.
Right now when you purchase 2 bags of M&M’s® at Walmart (9.4 oz bags or larger), up to a gallon of milk will be donated to the drive, so I headed there to stock with the items we needed for these cookies. You can fin most of these items in the Holiday Aisle in your local Walmart, except the milk, of course. You can find that back in the refrigerator section.
