Harry Potter Funko Pop Advent Calendar
Hogwarts is a special place throughout the year, but it was particularly magical at Christmas. The characters are all dressed for the Yule Ball. This fun calendar is great for wizards and muggles of all ages.
If you have a kid who loves gummy bears, or someone who just got their braces off, this could be a great option for them. With fruit and cola flavored gummy candies, marshmallows and licorice, this Advent calendar is full of daily taste treats. Appropriately, it’s made in Germany, where Advent calendars were first created.
Have a teen who loves cosmetics, skin care, and bath products? They’ll adore the 24 fun items in this cute Advent calendar, such as lip butter, a bath bomb, shea body butter, and coconut hand cream. All products are 100% vegetarian. We think the design of this calendar is super cute, too. At $64.66, it is, however, rather pricey. For a cheaper alternative, check out this Sephora option for $45 or 12 Days of Beauty Faves, which is under $30.
Man Stuff Men’s Toiletry Advent Calendar
Want to make grooming a bit more appealing and fun for adolescent boys? Perhaps this Advent calendar will do the trick. It includes a comb, nail brush, soap, hand sanitizer, a brush, face wash, and more.
Star Wars LEGO Advent Calendar
With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hitting theaters on December 20th, Star Wars will be taking over Christmas. Join in the fun with this Advent calendar that contains 24 minifigures that you can create from the 280 pieces, including Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, Naboo Starfighter, and Poe’s X-wing as well as festive-themed porg and Gonk Droids. It’s great for ages 6 and up, and we can think of several adults who would love to have this, too.
If your Star Wars fan has a sweet tooth, they’ll love this Star Wars Advent calendarr with 24 Stormtrooper milk chocolates.
If you have someone who is more into Avengers, check out this LEGO Avengers Advent calendar.
This is perfect for teens and tweens who may be feeling creative this Christmas. They can use the pens, colored pencils, and other implements on the included 24 postcards and stickers to express their artistic side this holiday season. Would be so fun to have them create gifts using the items.
Fortnite Advent Calendar by Funko
Your favorite gamers will find tiny versions of their favorite Fortnite characters behind each door in this Advent calendar.
Nintendo Super Mario Advent Calendar
Use 17 figurines and 7 accessories featuring characters and items from the beloved game to create a scene using the calendar itself.
2019 Mars Christmas Advent Calendar
The M&M’s face on this calendar amuses us, and we like the with variety of the candy assortment found inside – Skittles, Twix, M&Ms, Snickers and more.
Cadbury Heroes Christmas Advent-ure
Chocolate lovers and Anglophiles will delight at this delicious collection from the UK. Those who have been to Europe will be happy to see some Cadbury favorites again. If you’re not familiar, it’s really fun to discover these new treats. My only disappointment is that it doesn’t appear that any Flake bars are included. (I still miss them after studying in London, cough, 20+ years ago.)
OPI Hello Kitty Nail Polish Advent Calendar
OPI is one of the most popular nail polish brands among teens, and their holiday collection this year features an Advent calendar fun mini size Hello Kitty-inspired colors and a few beloved classics, too.
Festive Burlap Bags to make your own DIY Advent calendar
Create your own Advent calendar and gift your kids’ favorite candy, small gift items or coupons for things like getting out of a chore, pick what’s for dinner, or one-on-one time with a parent. We’ve done that at our house for years and it’s not only fun, it can be cost effective, too. You can put them wherever you like in the house.

]]>Teenagers are, like any age group, a diverse group with a variety of interests and opinions. However, they all agree on one thing – gift cards make great gifts.
As is developmentally appropriate, they like to have some control and they can be a bit fickle. Those are just a few of the reasons they love gift cards. They’re easy to get and wrap, and many can be sent by email, making them great options for last minute shopping. But the big question remains: a gift card to what store?
Here are the top gift cards for teens this holiday season according to my informal survey of a variety of adolescents:
This was at the top of the list for the teens I asked. In our area, Starbucks is a popular location to study and to just hang out with friends. Dunkin’ is known as a more efficient and economical option that’s a popular stop on the way to school. You can’t go wrong.
If you’re playing Santa to multiple people, I love this pack of four gift cards to Starbucks, each worth $10.
Hit the bullseye with a gift card to Target, which was also listed a top get by most teens. The store has something for everyone, and teens enjoy wandering. My daughter says it is a destination and going there is an event.
Amazon is a prime gift card to get. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.) One of my teen’s friends said Amazon is her favorite because she purchases gift cards to other stores from Amazon, and occasionally finds them on sale, giving her more purchasing power. I think the holiday pop-up box or snowman gift tin options make for a fun presentation.
Teens said they love that they can use Visa gift cards pretty much anywhere.
American Eagle, Urban Outfitters, and Pac Sun have clothing for males and females, so these trendy stores works for most kids.
Movie theater gift cards are particularly good at the holidays because kids are out of school and have time to see movies. Find out what theater is nearest to your teen gift recipient, such as AMC or Regal, and get a gift card to there.
If you’re looking to connect with them and you’re far away, ask them to let you know what movie they use it to see and if they would share their thoughts on it with you via text.
Teens love to eat. Go with that and get them a gift card to a favorite place. Chipotle is a pretty safe bet. If you have a teen who will likely be up for watching some college football bowl games over winter break, go with Buffalo Wild Wings.

]]>Fans of the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen adore the song “You Will Be Found.” There are also great gifts related to the show to be found online, and I’ve rounded some up here. (My daughter is a huge fan, so shhhhh, don’t tell her what she may be receiving this year.) Check out some of our favorite gifts for fans of Dear Evan Hansen that they will love for forever.
Dear Evan Hansen by Val Emmich
You hear of books being made into Broadway productions, but this is the reverse. The smash Tony-winning Broadway production was first on the stage and the novel of the story was released in 2018.
Dear Evan Hansen: Through the Window
This book is by the team that brought the musical to life – Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul – offers a look at all the went on behind the scenes for years to make Dear Evan Hansen the amazing show that it is today.

Adults still have wishes, though, which is why I was excited to hear how BMO Harris Bank is marking its 200th year. (And bicentennials really do call for big celebrations!)
They’ve put a modern twist on an old idea that pays homage to the centuries-old tradition of making a wish by tossing a coin into a fountain. They’ve inviting everyone in the community to make their own wishes through the BMO200 fountain. And, you never know when a wish will be granted!
You can find the fountain in Chicago outside The Shops at North Bridge, 520 N. Michigan Avenue, on level 1 nearest the Nordstrom mall entrance. At 17 feet high, you can’t miss it!
The interactive installation is reminiscent of a very big wishing well. That means you need to bring your big wishes, right? While most fountains use water, this one uses thousands of flip dots – the traditional technology used in destination boards at train stations – to create a unique ripple effect every time a wish is made.

Kids will love the colors and the longer battery life. Plus, parents will love no longer hearing “My phone died” when you were unable to reach them. This phone case does double duty – protecting the phone and acting as a battery. I can attest that my daughter’s Mophie has taken some hard hits and held up well. And it was a life saver this morning when she said “My battery is almost dead.”
You know how some gifts are much bigger hits than you anticipated? That happened last year with these stocking stuffers. I thought they were fun, but they were played with pretty much all winter and made random appearances throughout the year. These are fun for any age. There area lot of different animals, from unicorns to sharks to to pigs in Hawaiian shirts to holiday options like snowmen, reindeer, and more, so options to match each person’s interests.
12 Days of Beauty Faves
My daughter’s fact lit up when she saw this at Target. It could be great to give as a gift as is and see if the recipient can do one door per day during the 12 Days of Christmas. Another option: all these items are stocking stuffer size. You could be done with just one purchase if you have someone who loves beauty and bath products.
Day Out
Experiences create memories that last longer than most things and let’s face it, the time your kiddo is under the same roof is dwindling. Think about what your tween or teen loves and give a coupon good for a day, or more, out. Get ideas and specifics on experiences as gifts here.
Hint: If you can, schedule the outing for over the holiday break. School pressures aren’t so time consuming and it’s a bit easier to relax together.
My teen loves Alex & Ani bracelets, and I love that they have empowering messaging behind them. They’re a great way to reflect what’s important to your tween or teen, be it a favorite baseball team (Go Cubs!), memorable trip from this year, cause near and dear to their heart, or favorite animal (elephant for my girl).
These are not cheap, but some models were more affordable than I had realized. Make your tween or teen the documentarian of the family gatherings and have them put together movies of the fun. It’s also great for capturing their adventures, be it sledding, skiing or surfing somewhere warm.
Duffel Bag – for gym, dance, practice, yoga, travel anything
Teenagers are notoriously hard on their bags, and famously forgetful when it comes to leaving nasty items inside of them. Getting a fresh one is a gift to both of you, really. However, even if a new one isn’t needed for those activities, it may be good to have a clean one on hand for travel, including college visits. These cute Vera Bradley options are popular among my daughter’s friends.
Star Wars Lightsaber Growing Lab
I would want this even if didn’t have the fun Yoda quote on the front because I love products that make science fun. Add in keeping kids busy over break, and it’s a win for everyone.
Lin-Manuel Miranda has a pretty significant following of tween and teen fans, and the music he collaborated on for Moana is pretty great. It also includes some empowering messages great for tweens and teens.

]]>Anna is a family favorite. (Yup, I’m going with just “Anna” because I’m pretty sure she’d want me to, given that we’ve been in the same room and all.) My daughter loves the Pitch Perfect series and my husband loves Up in the Air.
She was interviewed for an hour by Greta Johnsen of WBEZ, Chicago’s public radio station. Anna was hilarious and relatable and insightful. Not only did we have a great time tonight, we learned these five fun facts about Anna Kendrick.
1. She loves Christmas. A lot.
Anna Kendrick is a huge Christmas fan, gushing, “I love Christmas music, it’s the best, and things that are spicy and gingerbready.” She said she was bugged that her home was decorated yet and that she “wants all the tacky crap that is shiny and Christmasy.”
Also, she offered a bit of realism, explaining that while Christmas Day itself is usually a “mess” due to people not sufficiently appreciating the gifts you got them that you thought were genius. Despite the day itself being a letdown, the season leading up to it is her favorite.
2. She thinks everyone should read So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson.
Greta asked Anna to give the audience a homework assignment. Anna suggested that everyone read “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed,” a book that she said was not only a good read, but one that wanted her to be more compassionate.
She also said she liked Ronson’s book The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry.
3. Her favorite subreddit is eyebleach.
When asked how to cope with trying times, she said that the Eyebleach subreddit offers a respite. She said cute creature videos can work wonders, as a healthy dose of adorable animals that help you forget the world’s ills.
4. She’s not a fan of the word “nice.”
Anna touches a bit in the book about why she doesn’t like the word “nice.” Greta asked her to elaborate a bit. She thinks “nice” is often conflated with “obedient.” She thinks that many people are nice because they are expected to be, not because they want to be.
“You can be a good person without being nice.” – Anna Kendrick
That quote from her led to an interesting family discussion on the way home. What do you think?
5. She loves the Container Store, but has her limits when it comes to organizational materials.
“If you buy these three little plastic boxes, everything will be great!” However, she does not love everything available at the Container Store, and called out shelf dividers. “Completely useless!” she declared.

]]>Hamilton: An American Musical has a legion of very loyal fans. Those who love it really, really love it. (That includes my teen and myself.) There is some fun Hamilton merchandise for those fans, which is much more affordable than tickets to the show in either New York or Chicago. Here are some great gifts for Hamilton fans that you may have on your list.
Great for everyone: Hamilton: The Revolution
This book is a must-read for those who love the musical. I received this as a birthday gift and loved it. Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the show, and Jeremy McCarter, this tome explores the production and the inspirations behind it in great depth with beautiful photos and all the lyrics to every song. The history nerd in me totally geeked out over the footnotes and annotations to the lyrics. Reading this makes it very easy to see how the show won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and eleven Tony Awards.
For the really devoted: Hamilton 2017 Wall Calendar
This may be just the way to introduce younger smartphone devotees to the concept of a written calendar. It’s great for room decor for teens and college students, too.
For those addicted to their phone: Hamilton Playbill Phone Case
Speaking of smartphones, this case for the iPhone 6/6s features the image of a Playbill signed by the stars is pretty great, and perfect stocking stuffer size. This is also budget friendly. (It’s rubber, so perhaps not providing amazing protection, but fun nonetheless.)
Awesome for coffee, tea, and cocoa lovers: Hamilton mug
The Hamilton mug is not only microwave safe, it is also official, licensed merchandise.
Wonderful for a jewelry lover: Rise Up necklace
“Rise up” is a lyric that appears in several Hamilton songs. It has a great deal of meaning and is pretty inspiring. This sweetly simple necklace would make a great stocking stuffer.
Perfect for a reader or history buff: Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow
This is the book where it happened. Miranda took it on vacation with him and the rest is history. At 832 pages, this is a hefty book, but it’s fascinating to learn even more about Alexander Hamilton’s life.
Fun for artistic types: Hamilton: An Adult Coloring Book
With images ranging from Eliza and Alexander’s wedding to Revolutionary War battles, this is great for those who love the show and coloring. It will be available on December 6, just in time for the holidays!
Cat lovers will adore this Hamilcat t-shirt
Aaron Burr is a main character in the show, but Aaron Purr steals the show on this adorable shirt.
Good for musicians: Hamilton: Easy Piano Selections
The music to Hamilton is amazing and learning to play the tunes is pretty awesome. The songs are very simplified so even I could handle them. My daughter who plays flute was able to use this to make out some of the songs. Its worth noting that not all songs are included. (There are 46 on the cast recording.) But those that are in the book are fun and not too challenging.
For those with a sense of humor: Hamilton T-shirt
This line sung sarcastically by King George III gets a lot of laughs and is pretty hilarious. If you’re gifting a Hamilton friend with a sense of humor, they’ll appreciate this.
Ideal for procrastinators: A million things I haven’t done t-shirt
I presume that most Hamilton fans already have the Grammy-winning original Broadway cast recording. On the off chance they do not have it, you can get the soundtrack here and the recently announced Hamilton Mixtape which comes out December 2 here. You can find all the official merchandise from the Broadway production here.

Here’s my July Stitch Fix review. (If you’re new to Stitch Fix, scroll down for an explanation of how this clothing subscription box works.)Seriously, Stitch Fix must employ folding fairies. I love the way the clothes arrive.
Marleena Knit Dress by Loveappella
This dress is a similar print to another Loveapella dress, but that one is a high-low and a different neck line. This is short and a faux wrap dress. That’s different enough, right? Please say right. Because I like this.
I do think I’ll update my profile to say no more blue/turquois print dresses because Stitch Fix has a lot of them and I have a tough time resisting.
Hadlie Side Slit Knit Top by Loveappella
Mira Cuffed Skinny Jean by Liverpool
This is an example of an outfit that may not photograph terribly well but it felt really good on. My 13-year-old daughter, the photographer, agreed that this looked better in person than it did in the photos.
First the jeans. I was worried about the waist band (see a close up in the video below) but it works. They are high waisted and while that may not be super cool, they cover a multitude of sins and for that, I’m grateful. They came rolled, but you can roll them down, so I like that they can be ankle length, too, and think that means they’d work for a multitude of heights.
As for the top, I love the detail on the sides and sleeves. I don’t know that it screams summer to me, but it’s light, but the sleeves may be nice to have on a cool summer night.
Nolen Printed Detail Henley Tank by Market & Spruce
(again with the Loveappella cropped jeans, styled with Mazzota Cut-Out Flats by Nine West from this Fix)
The jeans that come in petite sizes make me happy.
Now let’s talk about the Nolen Printed Detail Henley Tank. It’s definitely not something I’d pick off the rack, but one reason I like Stitch Fix is that it’s a way to gently be nudged out of my comfort zone. I’m not a girl to mix prints, this does exactly that, and in a pretty bold way.
Another Stitch Fix plus is getting to see what I already have in my closet that works with the pieces. This works with black shorts and jeans, white shorts and it turns out I have orange shorts that work well with it, too. It satisfies that multiple outfit requirement, and it’s comfy.
That said, I’m torn.
Dimitri Printed V Neck Dolman Knit Top by Market & Spruce
This is another top that doesn’t exactly screen summer to me, given the cuffed sleeves that don’t have a lot of give for pushing up and that it’s 30% polyester, which is not my favorite. I’d updated my profile to say none of that. I guess 30% isn’t a ton, but still. That said, I think it makes a good transitional top for late spring or early fall.
I usually prefer smaller prints. When you’re as short as I am, the smaller the printer the better so you don’t get overwhelmed by it. The feathers on this, however, seem fun, and I like the colors. There’s that issue of the dolman waist that’s not overly flattering, however. Hmmm…
So, that’s my Fix. Check out the unboxing video here, and please let me know your thoughts!
How Stitch Fix Works
It is a personal styling service for women that sends you clothing items by mail. You fill out a questionnaire that includes questions about your style, size, and budget preferences, what you want and what you don’t want. They use that info to pick out five items (tops, bottoms, dresses, accessories, coats, etc.) and mail them to your door, so you can try them on at home and see how they work with pieces you already have in your closet. I love the chance to see what outfits I can make using items I have in my closet and making sure I don’t already have something similar.
You have three days to decide what to keep or send back in the prepaid mailer they include in your box. There is a $20 styling fee that is applied to your order, and that is charged whether you keep any items or not. If you keep all five items, you get a 25% discount on everything. You are only charged once you “check out” at Stitch Fix.

You can see my unboxing and initial reaction to the items here:
And here’s how they actually looked on:
Kassidy Faux Wrap Dress by 41Hawthorn
Verdict: Keep!
I’m leading with this because it was my favorite item in this Fix. I had pinned it to my Stitch Fix board on Pinterest in a different color and my stylist, Meredith, said they didn’t have the color available but sent me this navy and red combo instead. I’m so glad she did, and I like this dress even better than what I had pinned.
Mazzota Cut-Out Flats by Nine West
Verdict: Undecided
Did you know that Stitch Fix has shoes now? Very fun!
These were cute. Meredith said she sent them to go with the Kassidy dress and I love her vision, but the shoes are really orange-red, and didn’t come close to matching the true red of the dress.
I really like these, but I don’t really need them and wonder if it wouldn’t be better to put the money toward real red shoes that would match the dress. What do you think?
Violeta Scallop Detail Blouse
Verdict: Undecided
As I approach 40, I often wonder what’s age appropriate and while cut outs seem like they could be in the “don’t” category, I loved that this blouse made it seem okay. And I love scallops. The photos may not have turned out as well as I would have liked, but my 13 year old photographer had to scoot to dance class. It felt really good and would work well on its own and as a layering piece.
Elaine Ikat Print Pocket-Front Knit Shirt
Verdict: Returned
My stylist sent me this shirt because she saw I had pinned it on my Pinterest board. I love that she checks there and tries to give me what I want. I don’t love that I apparently don’t know what works well for me. I liked the colors of the shirt and thought a print would be a fun way to liven up my rather uninspired t-shirt stash.
This was fine, but it was not nearly as cute as it was in the photo I pinned. Just not a lot of wow factor when I’m wearing it. And at $44 for a t-shirt, I’m going to need to love it. It was a touch big and seemed to just hang and do nothing for my shape – perhaps it’s a good example of how petite sizing can go a long way?
Odell Textured V-Neck Dress by London Times
Verdict: Returned
I shall refer to this item as the Mullet Dress. It worked well in the front, but was a hot mess in the back. I had asked for items with sleeves, and so my stylist sent me this, saying that in addition to having sleeves, it is a figure flattering shape.
And it was, until I turned around. Then, not so much.
In addition to just being too small, the pleats in the back were at perhaps the worst possible place for me. And the horizontal striping in the textured fabric didn’t help. I did like the v-neck and the color, which was a bit brighter than in the styling card.
