My favorite healthy holiday snack: The fruit tree

Table of Contents

The holidays are a season of sugar and sweets. Healthy options don’t really get a lot of attention. Other than the “visions of sugarplums danced in their heads,” you don’t hear a whole lot about fruits, and even less about veggies.

But we all know that kids will eventually suffer a sugar crash, and it’s often not a pretty sight. Kids need real food and although I don’t always like to admit it, adults do, too. But who says real food can’t be fun and festive, too?

Here’s my favorite healthy holiday snack, the simple fruit Christmas tree:

Fun, festive, fast, and fat-free.

It’s not fancy, and it’s not a work of art. It’s also not terribly time consuming and it’s easy to assemble. In fact, you can safely put your kids in charge of this project with no worries.

Clementines are in season and currently on sale at the grocery store, as are raspberries. If you want to fancy it up, you can use pomegranate seeds. Desert Chica did that and her tree came out beautifully – you can see it here.

In fact, you can do this with pretty much any combination of food that you like. I like clementines for the simple reason that they don’t move much. Grapes are just a little too rolly polly and I was going to be moving this plate to our table. You could cut them in half if you were dedicated to your tree being green.

We enjoyed this at a Saturday morning breakfast but this is good pretty much any time.
