I’ve been really excited for a great lineup of family-friendly, animated films that are headed our way this fall, and believe me, I still am, but there are some great options for grownn-ups, too. It’s been far too long since my husband and I have gone to the movies the two of us, and I think it’s time for a cinematic date night, and soon.
Bridge of Spies, which opens on Friday, fits the date night bill. Bridge of Spies from DreamWorks is film directed by Steven Spielberg, written in part by the Coen brothers and starring Tom Hanks. So yeah, I’m in. Talk about big names.
“A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, ‘Bridge of Spies’ tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life.”
It’s a legal drama, a thriller, and a historical epic all wrapped up into one. As a recovering attorney, I’m interested to see Hanks portray a man who was committed to the principles of justice and a fair trial, regardless of citizenship. Although Donovan’s role is not well known in the annals of Cold War history (I confess I’ve never heard of him), his is a gripping tale of an idealistic man navigating the world of national security and subterfuge.
