Tonight my family went to see a talk by Anna Kendrick. She visited our hometown of Naperville as part of the\u00a0book tour for Scrappy Little Nobody<\/a>,\u00a0her recently released memoir.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Anna is a family favorite. (Yup, I’m going with just “Anna” because I’m pretty sure she’d want me to, given that we’ve been in the same room and all.) My daughter loves the Pitch Perfect<\/a> series and my husband loves\u00a0Up in the Air<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She\u00a0was interviewed for an hour by Greta Johnsen of WBEZ, Chicago’s public radio station. Anna was hilarious and relatable and insightful. Not only did we have a great time tonight, we learned these five fun facts about Anna Kendrick.<\/p>\n

1. She loves Christmas. A lot.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Anna Kendrick is a huge Christmas fan, gushing, “I love Christmas music, it’s the best, and things that are spicy and gingerbready.” She said she was bugged that her home was decorated yet and that she “wants all the tacky crap that is shiny and Christmasy.”<\/p>\n

Also, she\u00a0offered a bit of realism, explaining that while Christmas Day itself is usually a “mess” due to people not sufficiently appreciating the gifts you got them that you thought were genius. Despite the day itself being a letdown, the season leading up to it is her favorite.<\/p>\n

2. She thinks everyone should read So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed<\/a>\u00a0by Jon Ronson.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Greta asked Anna to give the audience a homework assignment. Anna suggested that everyone read “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed,” a book that she said was not only a good read, but one that wanted her to be more compassionate.<\/p>\n

She also said she liked Ronson’s book\u00a0The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Her favorite subreddit is eyebleach<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When asked how to cope with trying times, she said that the Eyebleach subreddit offers a respite. \u00a0She said cute creature videos can work wonders, as a\u00a0healthy dose of adorable animals that help you forget the world’s ills.<\/p>\n

4. She’s not a fan of the word “nice.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Anna touches a bit in the book about why she doesn’t like the word “nice.” Greta asked her to\u00a0elaborate a bit. She thinks “nice” is often conflated with “obedient.” She thinks that many people are nice because they are expected to be, not because they want to be.<\/p>\n

That quote from her led to an interesting family discussion on the way home. What do you think?<\/p>\n

5. She loves the Container Store, but has her limits when it comes to organizational materials.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“If you buy these three little plastic boxes, everything will be great!” However, she does not love everything available at the Container Store, and called out shelf dividers. “Completely useless!” she declared.<\/p>\n
