There are 85.4 million mothers in the United States – that’s a lot of mamas, and a lot of celebrating to be done this Sunday on Mother’s Day. If you’re wondering about the history of the holiday, check out this post. I thought these infographics on Mother’s Day celebrations had some some interesting stats about how we’re honoring our moms this Mother’s Day and in recent years, so I thought I’d share them.

Did you know that Mother’s Day is the 3rd biggest retail holiday of the year? Spending on gifts for our moms has been shooting up in recent years.

So what is everyone spending all their money on when it comes to Mother’s Day gifts?

Well, to start, flowers – lots and lots of flowers. I was surprised to read that Mother’s Day is a bigger day for floral sales than Valentine’s Day. Americans will spend approximately $2.4 billion dollars on floral arrangements for Mother’s Day.

Americans are also giving lots of cards. In fact, 80% of people celebrating give a card.

And I have to say that I love seeing that more than half are giving a special outing. Making fun and special memories with our families is absolutely the best.

We’re also honoring a wide variety of important women on Mother’s Day.

Father’s Day, however, does not generate that same level of spending. Sorry, dads! The average Father’s Day gift costs $50 less than the average Mother’s Day gift.
