I’m over at Chicago Parent<\/a> sharing what parents need to know about Auditory Processing Disorder <\/a>(APD).<\/p>\n

Dr. Jennifer Gagesch of the Sertoma Speech and Hearing Center shared some info for parents about Auditory Processing Disorder :<\/p>\n

* APD often occurs along with ADHD or ADD, as well as dyslexia and they all originate in the same area of the brain.<\/p>\n

* A child’s auditory processing system is typically mature at age 12, on average. APD occurs in kids who are slower to mature but it will eventually happen. APD is not permanent.<\/p>\n

* APD is controversial, but more and more audiologists and school officials accept that it exists and can improve with treatment. One option is the child wearing an FM system in a noisy classroom to be able to better focus on what the teacher is saying.<\/p>\n
