When my daughter was a preschooler, I enrolled her in a park district science class. She picked out a very fancy dress to wear, one that made her feel like one of the Disney princesses she adored. When we got to class, she was the only girl enrolled. And the boys said that princesses don’t do science. Needless to say, I was displeased.

Fast forward a few years, and times have changed. Thanks to Disney Imagicademy, princesses and science now go hand in hand with the recent release of the Frozen: Early Science app series. Before we dive into that, though, let’s back up just a bit and talk a bit about Imagicademy.

What is Disney Imagicademy?

Disney Imagicademy is a technology-driven learning initiative for families with children ages 3 to 8. It takes an interactive approach to learning by encouraging exploring, making, and doing. Experts in child development and in the academic fields covered helped develop the apps.

The apps cover math, creative arts, science, language arts and social skills.

I got to learn a bit more about it at the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration when Dr. Tanya Altmann gave a talk about it. The goal of Disney Imagicademy is to help kids become confident and joyful learners, something all parents hope their children will be. “The goal of Disney Imagicademy has always been to inspire children’s natural curiosity, and what better subject to do that with than science – where discovery and experimentation is at the heart of learning,” explains Jeff Sellinger, senior vice president, Disney Learning.

To achieve that goal, Imagicademy uses three key elements:

1. Creative and interactive experiences that are uniquely Disney

My brother said his three-year-old daughter enjoyed the pictures I sent from the conference and asked if I had any more, saying, “This kid loves anything interactive that has to do with Disney.” I thought, “Those Imagicademy people know their audience!” Needless to say, I directed them to the apps. When I write reviews, I think, “Would I recommend this to a family member?” You know now that the answer is a resounding “Yes!”

2. A view of learning as a family experience because parents are key in children’s success

Imagicademy has a companion app just for parents. It allows parents to interact with kids by giving them high fives based on their progress on the app. “Sometimes we forget just how important feedback really is,” said Dr. Altmann, noting that her little boy asks for the high fives from her via the parent app. She’s so very right. The more positive reinforcement we can give their kids regarding their learning, the more they’ll want to learn.

The free parent app also has articles and interviews to help parents, including answering the question “What can I do with my kids today to help them grow?”

3. Connected experiences that bring digital and physical products together in one comprehensive learning program

I appreciate that they suggest activities off line, be it books and other print materials or toys or activities. acknowledging the importance of unconnected parent-child time.

What is the Frozen: Science app series on Disney Imagicademy?

"Frozen

The Disney Imagicademy Frozen: Early Science app series provides children with five total experiences that feature fundamental tools and concepts grounded in an early-sciences curriculum, including:

Phases of Matter and Life Science

· “Cooking Creations” – Children are invited to help Oaken and Olaf prepare a variety of creative and delicious dishes for Queen Elsa. With more than 35 ingredients and various preparation tools to experiment with, children can follow basic recipes or create their own. Cooking play exposes children to principles of state changes when they add or subtract heat, causing substances to melt, freeze, or evaporate. The game also provides the opportunity to observe water in solid, gas and liquid forms.

Role-playing a reindeer care specialist, children learn to see and meet the basic needs of baby reindeer for food, water, hygiene and rest. By treating reindeer ailments and taking care of the reindeer calves, children can make connections to their own health and personal care. Using their powers of observation, children begin to generalize about what it takes to keep animals healthy and happy!

"FrozenThat baby Sven is seriously cute, so much so that I want to play this app all day so I can take care of and hang out with him.

As they help seeds grow into adult plants, junior gardeners observe how water, sunlight, and nutrients affect their plants and how they grow. With patience and care, children can grow a variety of trees, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. They can even experiment with creating designer hybrid plants in Olaf’s greenhouse!

Through more than 100 levels, children will experiment with balance and structural integrity, use logic and reasoning, and hone their design sensibilities. In addition, they’ll use their creativity to design breathtaking ice lodges for the Arendelle Nature Park!

Ecosystems and Zoology

· “Forest Wilderness” – Children are invited to explore the Arendelle forest with Olaf and Kristoff. As they look for animals in the wilderness, children can observe and interact with a variety of wildlife in their natural habitat. They can also see how the seasons affect the forest environment and, as a result, animal behaviors. Children will delight in making surprising animal discoveries as they make their way through the forest!

How do I get the apps?

Frozen: Early Science is available now for $6.99, and Disney Imagicademy Parents, available for free, can be downloaded now for iPad and iPhone on the App Store. Additional Frozen: Early Science apps will be available in the App Store by early summer.

Should I get these apps?

I’m a fan, and I’ve recommended them to family members, as I said above. I appreciate that these apps are gender neutral. Both males and females are involved, be it Anna and Elsa or Kristoff and Olaf. I like that the app make science something little ones can experience on a daily basis, be it cooking dinner or helping in the garden. I’m always going to be in favor of helping kids see their world through the lens of science.

As education becomes increasingly STEM and STEAM oriented, exposing kids to science early is more important than ever. I think doing so in a way that makes it fun and engaging is certainly worth $7.

Disclosure: I was given a code for this app free of charge so that we could test it out and see what we thought. I received no other compensation from the app provider. The opinions expressed are my own or my child’s.
