I love that Valentine’s Day falls on the weekend, making it the perfect time for a special breakfast that can really be enjoyed, not just eaten in a rush on the way to school and work. A special Valentine’s Day breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful, though. Here are some idea for making your Valentine’s Day special but still keep things healthy and inexpensive.

If your family is like mine, there are lot of activities packed in on a Saturday, so I want to capitalize on the calm before the storm with a fun Valentine’s Day breakfast.

"Valentine

Fancy up your drinks.

If your little ones would prefer hot chocolate, top it off with whipped cream and red hots.

"FullSizeRender-28"Cranberry Apple juice is the perfect color for Valentine’s Day. If it’s a bit tart, mix with a bit of orange juice. Add in some raspberries, fresh or frozen, for extra color. If your kids are old enough, serve it in stemware to make things feel super fancy.

"IMG_6858"Make heart-shaped everything.

Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out bread for French Toast. Or I love the way Cake & Allie made these cinnamon rolls heart-shaped.

"DSC_0426-1024x685"Watermelon is really easy to cut into hearts – slice the watermelon and then use a cookie cutter (or even just your knife) to cut some hearts.

"water4"If you want to keep things supereasy, serve some Heart to Heart cereal by Kashi – some of the pieces are in the shape of hearts.

Think pink (or red).

It’s Valentine’s Day, so of course red and pink are the focus, but that doesn’t mean you have to go crazy with the food coloring. You can, of course, but here are some more natural ways to make things colorful. We’ve touched on the pink drink option. But there are some good and healthy food options, too. A bowl of fresh strawberries is a treat this time of year. (You can’t go wrong with raspberries, either.)

"Strawberries_with_hulls_-_scan"Cherry or strawberry yogurt is also pretty and healthy. Serve it in just a bowl, top with fruit, or make a parfait with granola.

"FullSizeRender-31"Citrus may not be your first thought for red, but don’t forget about ruby red grapefruit or even Cara Cara oranges, which have a beautiful red tone inside. It can be fun to surprise your kids with these.

"FullSizeRender-33"

An easy way to get into the Valentine spirit is with this red berry sauce from Home Everyday. Make your usual pancakes or crepes and top the with this yummy sauce.

"BerrySet the table the night before and add in some love.

It’s always fun to walk downstairs to something that’s festive and full of love. Leave a Valentine at each family member’s place at the table. It can be just a simple note saying what you love most about them.
