It’s much easier to fight the winter blahs when a Stitch Fix on door step. I  had fun with this latest fix, which had some hits and some misses. Read on to see what I got, what I sent back, what I kept and what went wrong in this February Stitch Fix review.

February Stitch Fix Review-2

But first . . . new to Stitch Fix?

If you’re unfamiliar with Stitch Fix, it’s a clothing subscription service that sends you a box of 5 items that a stylist selects for you based on a few things, including a questionnaire that includes questions about your style, size, and budget preferences, what you want and what you don’t want, as well as your Pinterest board and requests you make with each fix. (For tips on getting your best Fix, go here.)

The stylists selects five items (tops, bottoms, dresses, accessories, coats, shoes etc.) and mail them to your door, so you can try them on at home and see how they work with pieces you already have in your closet. You have three days to try them before sending back any you don’t wish to keep in the enclosed, prepaid mailer.

There is a $20 styling fee that is applied to your order, and that is charged whether you keep any items or not. If you keep all five items, you get a 25% discount on everything. You are only charged once you “check out” at Stitch Fix.

Annabelle Ribbed Detail Open Cardigan by Laju

Annabelle Ribbed Detail Open Cardigan from Stitch Fix

This is a very dark plum, and I wasn’t sure about the color at first but it grew on me over the three days. I loved how soft it was and that it works wonderfully over leggings and skinny jeans. It was definitely on the pricey side but I’ve worn it quite often since I received it, so I think it was a worthwhile purchase.

I liked the different textures, and this photo gives you an idea of the color, which I’m not thinking isn’t quite plum after all.

Verdict: Kept

Quinn Stone Collar Necklace by Bay to Baubles

The Quinn Stone Collar Necklace by Bay to Baubles was in my Stitch Fix. I love it! See what elseI got in the post.

I really liked this necklace – big enough to make a statement, but not too large or overpowering. Also, not too heavy. I hate when collar necklaces feel like armor.

Verdict: Kept. I even wore today when traveling and even got compliments on it from both a TSA employee and a flight attendant. Great! Except by the time I got to my destination, two of the stones had fallen out. It was not a turbulent flight and I certainly didn’t do anything rugged or engage in any unusual conduct. I’m going to follow up with Stitch Fix customer service.

Quinn Stone Collar Necklace from Stitch Fix. I loved it, but the stones came loose quickly. Two fell out after just a few wearings.

Ari Lace Up Cable Detail Turtleneck by Black Tape

Ari Lace Up Cable Detail Turtleneck by Black Tape from Stitch Fix

I asked for a cozy yet stylish winter sweater. I thought this was cute but unfortunately, it did not look great on me. There was something weird about the fit and the cut – it was boxy and just me in all the wrong places. For that price, it needs to fit like a glove and make me look great. Sadly, this did neither, but I think on someone taller, it could be great.

Verdict: Returned

Isles Henley Blouse by Skies Are Blue

Isles Henley Blouse by Skies are Blue from Stitch Fix

I really wanted to love this shirt. The color was lovely. They way it looked on me, however, made it clear that it wasn’t meant to be.

Karen Printed Straight Leg Pant by Erica Taylor

Erica Taylor - Karen Printed Straight Leg Pant from Stitch Fix

Polka dot pants. Huh. I wasn’t sure when I took them out of the box, and my teen daughter was nearly aghast. When I put them on, though, we both liked them more than we thought. In fact, my daughter was downright supportive of them. However, I was not quite as sold. They’re just not me.

Verdict: Returned

There were photos of me in the items, but they have mysteriously disappeared. I apologize. However, please trust me when I say that you aren’t missing much when it comes to ill-fitting shirts. This is a sign from the universe that the world just isn’t meant to see me in polka dot pants. I’ll do better next time, I promise!

I asked for my stylist to send me some fun items to usher in a new season and help me usher in a new decade with a big birthday later this month. Check out my fall Stitch Fix review below!

Fall Stitch fix review
First, what is Stitch Fix?

If you’re new to Stitch Fix, it’s a clothing subscription service that sends you a box of 5 items that a stylist selects for you based on a few things, including a questionnaire that includes questions about your style, size, and budget preferences, what you want and what you don’t want, as well as your Pinterest board and requests you make with each fix. The stylists selects five items (tops, bottoms, dresses, accessories, coats, shoes etc.) and mail them to your door, so you can try them on at home and see how they work with pieces you already have in your closet.I love the chance to see what outfits I can make using items I have in my closet and making sure I don’t already have something similar.

Here’s what my stylist sent in this Fix.

Donny Cowl Neck Pullover by RD Style

Donny Cowl Neck Pullover Stitch Fix
I love a good cowl neck and this makes me feel totally ready for fall –  all I need is a pumpkin spice latte and a few fallen leaves to kick. I was excited to have a camisole that worked really well to wear underneath this very textured sweater.

Verdict: Undecided

Cowl Neck sweater stitch fix

I love the textures in the sweater, but I’m a little worried that it’s a major snag waiting to happen.

Donny Cowl Neck Pullover RD Style Stitch Fix
DV8 Penny Loafer

DV8 Penny Loafer Stitch Fix

These are fine. I like the but didn’t quite fit right. While they were nice, they weren’t hugely comfortable. You can find similar shoes in faux suade a similar color on Amazon for $25 here.

Verdict: Sending back.

Crescent Healy Button Down Top Stitch Fix
Healy Button Down Top by Crescent

This top is definitely in the spirit of fall. I love that it’s long enough to wear with either skinny jeans or leggings. Also, I like that it goes with a variety of bottoms, from skinny jeans with either brown or black boots/shoes or black leggings. It even worked with khaki shorts.

Crescent Healy Button Down Top Stitch Fix
But I’m torn. It’s not bad, but it’s also not a wow, given that it’s doing nothing for my figure and maybe a little low cut? I’m also debating how it will wash and if ironing is required. I’d rather spend fall watching college football or visiting an apple orchard, not ironing.

Verdict: Undecided

Gilli Nell Jersey Dress Stitch Fix
Nell Jersey Dress by Gilli

I liked this, but didn’t love it. I appreciate the full skirt and that there was a waist, but the way it bloused on the top just didn’t do anything for already-top-heavy me. The neckline also didn’t lay quite right.

Verdict: Returned

Kayla Printed Flare Skirt

Kayla Printed Flare Skirt by Margaret M

I apologize for the shadows in this photo. This skirt is really cute, just not on me. I really wanted to love this skirt. The print and the colors are fun. I didn’t think it was amazing with the loafers but that’s the least of my issues. The diagonal seaming was not flattering. At all.

Verdict: Returned.

You can check out my unboxing video here:

Advise me, please, good people of the internet. Which top would you keep? Or should I send them both back?

July Stitch Fix Review http://betweenusparents.com/july-stitch-fix-review/ http://betweenusparents.com/july-stitch-fix-review/#comments Fri, 01 Jul 2016 13:26:48 +0000 http://betweenusparents.com/?p=5521 New month, new Stitch Fix! Hard to believe that 2016 is more than half over and that it’s July already. I found out last month that the stylist to whom I’ve grown quite attached was leaving the company due to her husband’s move, and I was curious to see what a new stylist sent in my response to a request for comfortable, casual summer clothes.

Here’s my July Stitch Fix review. (If you’re new to Stitch Fix, scroll down for an explanation of how this clothing subscription box works.)July Stitch Fix Seriously, Stitch Fix must employ folding fairies. I love the way the clothes arrive.

Marleena Knit Dress by Loveappella

Marleena Knit Dress Loveappella Stitch Fix
This dress is a similar print to another Loveapella dress, but that one is a high-low and a different neck line. This is short and a faux wrap dress. That’s different enough, right? Please say right. Because I like this.

I do think I’ll update my profile to say no more blue/turquois print dresses because Stitch Fix has a lot of them and I have a tough time resisting.

Hadlie Side Slit Knit Top by Loveappella
Mira Cuffed Skinny Jean by Liverpool

Hadlie Side Slit Knit Top July Stitch Fix Review Loveappella
This is an example of an outfit that may not photograph terribly well but it felt really good on. My 13-year-old daughter, the photographer, agreed that this looked better in person than it did in the photos.

First the jeans. I was worried about the waist band (see a close up in the video below) but it works. They are high waisted and while that may not be super cool, they cover a multitude of sins and for that, I’m grateful. They came rolled, but you can roll them down, so I like that they can be ankle length, too, and think that means they’d work for a multitude of heights.

As for the top, I love the detail on the sides and sleeves. I don’t know that it screams summer to me, but it’s light, but the sleeves may be nice to have on a cool summer night.

Nolen Printed Detail Henley Tank by Market & Spruce

(again with the Loveappella cropped jeans, styled with Mazzota Cut-Out Flats by Nine West  from this Fix)

Market and Spruce Nolen Printed Detail Henley Tank Stitch FixThe jeans that come in petite sizes make me happy.

Now let’s talk about the Nolen Printed Detail Henley Tank. It’s definitely not something I’d pick off the rack, but one reason I like Stitch Fix is that it’s a way to gently be nudged out of my comfort zone. I’m not a girl to mix prints, this does exactly that, and in a pretty bold way.

Nolen Printed Detail Henley Tank Stitch Fix JulyAnother Stitch Fix plus is getting to see what I already have in my closet that works with the pieces. This works with black shorts and jeans, white shorts and it turns out I have orange shorts that work well with it, too. It satisfies that multiple outfit requirement, and it’s comfy.

That said, I’m torn.

Dimitri Printed V Neck Dolman Knit Top by Market & Spruce

Dimitri Printed V Neck Dolman Knit Top Stitch Fix

This is another top that doesn’t exactly screen summer to me, given the cuffed sleeves that don’t have a lot of give for pushing up and that it’s 30% polyester, which is not my favorite. I’d updated my profile to say none of that. I guess 30% isn’t a ton, but still. That said, I think it makes a good transitional top for late spring or early fall.

I usually prefer smaller prints. When you’re as short as I am, the smaller the printer the better so you don’t get overwhelmed by it. The feathers on this, however, seem fun, and I like the colors. There’s that issue of the dolman waist that’s not overly flattering, however. Hmmm…

So, that’s my Fix. Check out the unboxing video here, and please let me know your thoughts!

Kicking off summer with a Stitch Fix http://betweenusparents.com/kicking-off-summer-stitch-fix/ http://betweenusparents.com/kicking-off-summer-stitch-fix/#comments Fri, 27 May 2016 04:19:54 +0000 http://betweenusparents.com/?p=5305 With school out and 80+ degree weather, it really does feel like summer’s here and I’m looking forward to lazy days and family fun. Looking at my wardrobe, though, I realized I had more dress clothes than casual options for warm weather, so I asked my Stitch Fix stylist for help with a summer wardrobe refresh.

Stitch Fix summer
For this fix, I requested clothes that would work for laid back, casual occasions that would make getting dressed and looking stylish easy. Here’s what she sent.

Stitch Fix Summer
Waters Knit Maxi
Dress by Papermoon

Tip: In the notes to your stylist, it’s possible to request an item. If you ask for an item, be as specific as possible. Don’t use just the item name, as there could be several incarnations of that dress. Be clear about color and print whenever possible.

I had pinned a Papermoon Waters Knit Maxi Dress to my Pinterest board a while ago. I still really like it, so I asked for it again. The Waters Knit Maxi Dress that I pinned was a different color combo and a slightly different print. I like this one, but not quite as much as I like the one I pinned.

Papermoon Waters Knit Maxi DressStill, it’s comfortable, casual and easy, which is what I asked for. It’s a little long – I’m wearing some pretty high wedges – but it works. Also, my daughter loved this and it looks even better on her, so it feels like as a household we will get good use of it. She’s really hoping that they will start teen Stitch Fix, and I can’t say I blame her.
Verdict: Kept!

Kathina Sheer Cut Out Knit Top by Fate
Lidia Printed Swing Skirt by Renee C

Stitch Fix skirt

First, the shirt. I really like the idea of the Kathina Sheer Cut Out Knit Top. The cut out detail is cute and I like the idea of a basic piece with a bit more interest and pop. But this just wasn’t the top for me.

Kathina Sheer Cut Out Knit Top Fate Stitch Fix The high neck didn’t do me any favors, but my biggest issue was with the sleeves. They hit my shoulders at the worst possible place and made me look like a linebacker. (You can see just how bad it is a few photos down.) It was not at all flattering.
Verdict: Returned.

The Lidia Printed Swing Skirt by Renee C was cute. I liked the print. Polyester, however, is definitely not my favorite fabric in the summer. (I learned that the hard way when I wore a cute but polyester Keziah Skirt Dress from this Fix in Turks & Caicos.)

Lidia Printed Swing Skirt Fate Stitch FixIt’s called a swing skirt, and I’m a girl who appreciates a good twirl, so I had my hopes up. This skirt, however, is made of a slightly stiff material and there really is no swing to it. My husband used the line “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.” If it had been inexpensive, I would have been tempted, but I didn’t love it enough to justify spending $64 on it.
Verdict: Returned

Deanne Printed Maxi Skirt by Loveappella

Deanne Printed Maxi Skirt LoveappellaI have the “This outfit is doing nothing for me” look on my face because, well, it’s not. I paired this skirt with the Kathina top at the suggestion of my stylist, but it just didn’t work for me. I love a good maxi skirt and agree that they make for comfy and easy dressing, but this one just isn’t me. The maxi skirt print and the colors aren’t my style. I appreciate that Stitch Fix nudges you outside your comfort zone, but this just isn’t something I would wear enough to justify the $58 price tag.
Verdict: Returned.

Edmond Henley Knit Top by Pixley

I think this is a bit of a Stitch Fix classic and I can see why. My stylist said she saw it on my Pinterest board and I didn’t remember it. Turned out that this is another interest of same item, different color and slightly different print (still chevron, but not as defined as this one). I felt a little better when I saw those differences and realized that I’m not completely losing my mind.

Tip: When pinning an item to your Stitch Fix board, be sure to specify exactly what you like about the piece – cut, color, print, style.

It’s very comfy, and it appears to be well-made. It may not do much for my figure, but it’s versatile. I liked that the sleeves are adjustable, which is nice in the summer when air conditioned spaces can be freezing cold.

Pixley Edmond Henley Knit Top

The Edmond Henley knit top worked well with white pants, which I liked even better than the jeans, but for some reason that photo was blurry so I’m hoping you’ll take my word for it. My goal is to have at least 3 outfits that I can make with a new Stitch Fix piece, and this pairs with the two different pants as well as white shorts.

I worry that it’s somewhat similar to the dress in terms of chevron and and aqua/navy color combo. I’m wishing that the top had come in the different color that I pinned, but I still like this one.
Verdict: Undecided but leaning toward keeping.

You can see my unboxing and initial reaction to the items, and my stylist’s news that made me very sad, here:

So, with my stylist Meredith departing the company, I’d love to know if you have a Stitch Fix stylist whom you love and would recommend. Please let me know in the comments!

And here’s how they actually looked on:

Kassidy Faux Wrap Dress by 41Hawthorn
Verdict: Keep!

Kassidy Faux Wrap Dress

I’m leading with this because it was my favorite item in this Fix. I had pinned it to my Stitch Fix board on Pinterest in a different color and my stylist, Meredith, said they didn’t have the color available but sent me this navy and red combo instead. I’m so glad she did, and I like this dress even better than what I had pinned.

Kassidy Faux Wrap Dress Stitch Fix

Mazzota Cut-Out Flats by Nine West
Verdict: Undecided

Did you know that Stitch Fix has shoes now? Very fun!

Mazzota Cut-Out Flats

These were cute. Meredith said she sent them to go with the Kassidy dress and I love her vision, but the shoes are really orange-red, and didn’t come close to matching the true red of the dress.

I really like these, but I don’t really need them and wonder if it wouldn’t be better to put the money toward real red shoes that would match the dress. What do you think?

Violeta Scallop Detail Blouse
Verdict: Undecided

As I approach 40, I often wonder what’s age appropriate and while cut outs seem like they could be in the “don’t” category, I loved that this blouse made it seem okay. And I love scallops. The photos may not have turned out as well as I would have liked, but my 13 year old photographer had to scoot to dance class. It felt really good and would work well on its own and as a layering piece.

Violeta Scallop Detail Blouse Stitch Fix

Elaine Ikat Print Pocket-Front Knit Shirt
Verdict: Returned

Elaine Ikat Print Pocket-Front Knit Shirt Stitch Fix

My stylist sent me this shirt because she saw I had pinned it on my Pinterest board. I love that she checks there and tries to give me what I want. I don’t love that I apparently don’t know what works well for me. I liked the colors of the shirt and thought a print would be a fun way to liven up my rather uninspired t-shirt stash.

Elaine Ikat Print Pocket-Front Knit Shirt

This was fine, but it was not nearly as cute as it was in the photo I pinned. Just not a lot of wow factor when I’m wearing it. And at $44 for a t-shirt, I’m going to need to love it. It was a touch big and seemed to just hang and do nothing for my shape – perhaps it’s a good example of how petite sizing can go a long way?

Odell Textured V-Neck Dress by London Times
Verdict: Returned

I shall refer to this item as the Mullet Dress. It worked well in the front, but was a hot mess in the back. I had asked for items with sleeves, and so my stylist sent me this, saying that in addition to having sleeves, it is a figure flattering shape.

And it was, until I turned around. Then, not so much.

Odell Textured V-neck dress

In addition to just being too small, the pleats in the back were at perhaps the worst possible place for me.  And the horizontal striping in the textured fabric didn’t help.  I did like the v-neck and the color, which was a bit brighter than in the styling card.

First, the shirt. I pinned this and really liked it. I feel like the lace is fun and the texture makes this top unique. I love that the back is really interesting.

FullSizeRender 7
Now, let’s talk about the jeans. While I like texture on my tops, I’m not sure about it on the bottom, especially when it means my pants are distressed. I spend a lot of time avoiding distress, so should the same be true for pants?

FullSizeRender 4
Friends, please advise: is there a point at which distressed jeans are no longer age appropriate?  Aside from the fact that 40 is knocking on the door and letting herself in, I don’t think I’ve ever had distressed or ripped jeans. Maybe I’m just not a holes/tears/rips kind of girl. The fact that I almost put my toe all the way through them when trying them on the first time probably tells me all I need to know, but I’d love to hear your thoughts.

41Hawthorn Abrianna Longsleeve Knit Cardigan

This was the cheapest item in my fix, and also my favorite. Love it when that happens! I love the color and the fit of this. This is with a pair of skinny jeans from a prior fix.

FullSizeRender 8
Market & Spruce Bernadette Lace Overlay Raglan Top

I was worried when I peaked at my fix when I first receive notice that it shipped and saw two raglan sleeve tops, but I have to say, they don’t seem at all alike to me. (Please forgive the bad photo.) I like it, but I don’t know that I can justify the $58 price tag for it.

FullSizeRender 3London Times Cace Sweater Dress

I usually adore dresses, but this one didn’t do a ton for me and made me feel bustier than usual. Great.

FullSizeRender 10
My stylist suggested pairing is with the cardigan that was also in this fix, which I did here. That didn’t knock my socks off but it won my daughter over. Huh.

So what do you think? What stays and what goes?

January Stitch Fix Review: Stylish hibernation is a thing, right? http://betweenusparents.com/january-stitch-fix/ http://betweenusparents.com/january-stitch-fix/#comments Thu, 07 Jan 2016 20:21:24 +0000 http://momfactually.com/?p=3358 New year, new Stitch Fix box! I decided to kick off 2016 with some style, thanks to Meredith, my stylist at Stitch Fix. I loved the last fix she sent, and was pleased to see that my request to have her style me again had been granted with my January Stitch Fix.

FullSizeRender 58
I asked for casual clothes that are warm and cozy for the Midwest winter. Although I cannot actually hibernate (or so I’ve been told), I’m not opposed to feeling like I am. Stylish hibernation is a thing, right? If not, it should be. My first thought when I opened the box and saw the neatly folded pile was that there are a lot of neutrals here.

FullSizeRender 59
Here’s my January Stitch Fix review – see what made it into my closet for keeps and what got sent back to the good folks at Stitch Fix.

Concord Reversible Plaid Chevron Scarf
– $38

Concord Reversible Plaid Chevron ScarfWhat I Liked: It was soft and warm

What I Didn’t Like: The idea of a reversible scarf is really appealing, but I’m not a huge fan of these two prints – chevron and plaid – together, particularly in those two colors schemes. Also, it was really, really bulky and hard to style. It felt a little like a neck brace when I tied it the way the style card suggested, and was just too voluminous when I left it open.

Verdict: Returned.

Maureen Twisted Seam Elbow Patch Sweater by RD Style – $64

Maureen Twisted Seam Elbow Patch Sweater

What I Liked: I liked that it was longer in the back and covered my bum.

What I Didn’t Like: I know Meredith said that elbow patches are on trend and I know she’s right, but when my husband and daughter each said separately, “Elbow patches? Really?” I thought that I would probably hear them say that in my head every single time I put this sweater on. I also thought that the fit wasn’t stellar – it was boxy, the sleeves were really long, the elbow patches were a bit low, and while the neckline wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great. Nothing about this was overly flattering, and while I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it either, and it felt like, at that price, I should love it to keep it.

Verdict: Returned.

Lawley Cable Knit Open Cardigan – $68

FullSizeRender 68
What I Liked:
I adored the pockets of this sweater, and that it fit the bill of warm, cozy and comfortable, which is exactly what I asked for in the note to my stylist.

What I Didn’t Like: Meredith had no way to know that I already have two cream colored open cardigans, including one that is ridiculously similar to this, without the pockets and not as soft, of course. Sadly, though, at this price, I just couldn’t justify keeping another one, especially considering that so many sweaters in the stores are on sale right now. I may ask for it in my next fix in a different color.

Verdict: Returned, sadly.

Aleah Heathered V-Neck Dolman Top – $48

FullSizeRender 63What I Liked: I don’t have a ton of brown, and I liked this color. The cheapest top in this fix, I also liked this price. I’m also a fan of v-necks, and thought that this paired nicely with the Sofia Hammered Square Collar Necklace from my last fix.

What I Didn’t Like: The 3/4 sleeves are fine, but not overly toast given that the high here on Sunday will be 17 degrees (the low will be 2 – brrrr!) But I do think this will get wear in other seasons

Verdict: Kept

Joylyn Ponte Legging by Lysse – $78

What I Liked: The burgundy color was fun. I don’t have any bottom pieces in this color, and I like it. I also like the Meredith pointed out that these would work really well with the black and cream poncho from my last fix. Love that she remembers that and is helping me assemble outfits.

What I Didn’t Like: The fit and the price. These were a medium, and I know I ate too many cookies at Christmas, but putting them on was a blow to the ego. Big time. They weren’t even close to being comfortable, and not even acceptable to show a photo. That bad. I did some googling and it seems I’m not the only one to find that these run small.  Even if they had fit, the price is too steep for me, especially for leggings.

Verdict: Returned.

FullSizeRender 60So, I only kept one item this time. What do you think? I did make the right choices? What would you have kept? And how many cream open cardigans can one reasonably have in her closet?

Focus on Fall Fashion: Stitch Fix Review October 2015 http://betweenusparents.com/focus-on-fall-fashion-stitch-fix-review-october-2015/ http://betweenusparents.com/focus-on-fall-fashion-stitch-fix-review-october-2015/#respond Tue, 20 Oct 2015 03:29:38 +0000 http://momfactually.com/?p=2891 It’s Stitch Fix time again! For this fix, I requested that Crystal style me. I forgot to specifically request her last time, got someone else and missed Crystal. She was back this time! I requested that this Stitch Fix focus on fun and comfy items for fall. As you can see in the photos, there is no doubt that it’s autumn here in the Midwest and I was ready to dress for the season.

But first, if you’re new to Stitch Fix, here’s how it works:

It is a personal styling service for women. You fill out a questionnaire that includes questions about your style, size, and budget preferences, what you want and what you don’t want. They use that info to pick out five items (tops, bottoms, dresses, accessories, coats, etc.) and mail them to your door, so you can try them on at home and see how they work with pieces you already have in your closet.

If you want to see my unboxing and my initial reactions to the pieces, check out this video:

After taking advantage of my three days to decide, here are my thoughts and final decisions on the items Stitch Fix sent my way:

THML Pierina Textured Colorblock Peacoat

DSCN0465
So, this coat made me think of this hat from Target that I already had, and I thought they paired pretty well together. There’s a lot going on with this coat – color blocking, quilting, double breasted and a whole lot of collar. But it works. I know, I need black boots. They’re on the Christmas list! But I did really like it. I have a thing for coats

Verdict: Kept.

Daniel Rainn Dorado V-Neck Blouse

Daniel Rainn Dorado V-Neck Blouse Stitch FixI really liked the color of this blouse, and the detailing was intricate, but I still couldn’t justify spending more than $60 on what would amount to a shell for me. Fall is pretty chilly here in northern Illinois, and this light fabric wouldn’t cut it, and I worry that a sweater and other layering pieces would cover the detail that makes this top stand out.

Status: Returned.

Le Lis Tilda Rhinestone Detail Sweater

DSCN0469I wanted to love this sweater. I really did, and not just because it was the least expensive item in my fix. The fabric was super soft, but also seemed like it could possibly pill pretty quickly. Despite that, I really did want to like it and had it been in any other color, it would have been a keeper. But this color was just, well, meh. An informal poll on Instagram confirmed that it just doesn’t do a whole lot for me. It was $48.

Verdict: Returned.

Collective Concepts  Sallie Dress

Collective concepts sallie dress stitch fix

Again, love the color of this item, as you can tell from the fact that I had jewelry that matched the color pretty perfectly. But there were a few issues with this piece. The pleats off the shoulder seam were a little odd. Not necessarily bad, but they didn’t wow me. Also, while I typically love the idea of a little snap to keep a wrap top shut and modest, it loses something when you can see said snap, as you can tell from the closeup.

The fabric is nice, but it’s not a casual dress. If I worked in an office, it’d be great. But I don’t. I have a dress in a similar fabric from a prior fix that’s a yummy plum color. That and this teal (which photographing more blue, but it was very teal in person) are probably my two favorite fall colors, but I don’t need a dress in each. As seldom as I get dressed up, one is sufficient and this dress at $78 didn’t convince me otherwise.

Status: Returned.

Olive & Oak Tania Button Down Top

Olive & Oak Tania Button Down Top

I may be getting cheap, but I don’t think it’s too much to say that $68 is a lot for a plaid button down. Also, this was a little snug in the arms. As is a theme from this box, it was similar to a prior Stitch Fix item that I kept and loved, as you can see in the side by side photo. The photo on the left is the shirt from this fix, the one on the right is from a prior fix. (Yes, it looks a bit short because I accidentally put it in the dryer and shrunk it. I’m still sad about that but do still wear it.) I just didn’t love this top enough to pay that much for it, especially when Old Navy has plaids for $19.

Verdict: Returned.

So, I only kept one item this fix, but I think I’ll get a lot of use out of it. Did I make the right call?

I received no compensation for this post. If you sign up for Stitch Fix using my referral link here, I get a couple dollars toward my next fix.

I’ve been getting clothes from Stitch Fix for several years now and I’ve recently started sharing blog posts about them here. I love it, but Fixes can be hit or miss. Of course, no one wants the latter. Here are some new tips for getting the best possible Stitch Fix box.

tips for best possible stitch fix
Follow blogs to find clothing you love

Stitch Fix updates its blog regularly, so keep tabs on it. The Stitch Fix Blog a great source for ideas of what to ask, and for pins. If you see something on the blog that you love, be sure to ask for it specifically. It also provides good advice on how to wear and style certain items. If you know just what you can do with what’s in your Fix, it’s likely to work better for you.

Stitch Fix Reviews is a Facebook page that shares a different blog post about a Fix each day. It’s fun to see what other people are getting, and another great source of ideas for what to pin to your Pinterest board and if you see something you love.

Another option for finding blogs is to just google “Stitch fix review” and filter results by the past month or so and pin anything catches your eye.

Screen Shot 2015-10-07 at 2.50.22 PM

Make maximum use of your Pinterest board

Speaking of pinning, Stitch Fix encourages users to have a Pinterest board that can help give stylists an idea of what you like. First, make sure the board is obvious to your stylist. Mine used to be name “My Style” and while that’s not exactly hiding anything, I renamed it to “Stitch Fix Style Board.” No mistaking it now! Follow mine here.

Having a Pinterest board is a good start, but if you aren’t making full use of the comments, it’s not as big a help to you as it could be. Pinning is great. Using the description of the pin and the comments section to communicate to your stylist exactly what you liked about the item you pinned is even better. Do you love the color? The cut? The fabric? Say exactly what it is that appeals to you. Also be sure to update it before you schedule your fix.

Update your board, and have it reflect what you’d like to receive. Give your Stitch Fix Pinterest board a check each season. If you’re hoping for warmer pieces for the fall and winter, a lovely array of sun dresses is going to do your stylist, or you, much good. And if there are items on your board that you just aren’t feeling any more, delete them.

Be honest

Help your stylist help you – shoot it to them as straight as you can.

I know, you’re a really nice person. If you get an item you hate, you are probably too nice to say so in the feedback section when you check out. You really need to get over that. Be honest. Brutally so. You’ve never met your stylist and chances are pretty high that you never will. And you even you did meet them, they want you to be honest. They want to get a sense of what you like and don’t like. If you really don’t like something, say so. Don’t sugar coat it. Be brutally honest.

Also, be honest when you’re filling out your profile and updating it. If you’ve gained some weight, update the weight section. Even if it’s 5 pounds, do it. That can make a different in how clothes fit.

Ask for what (and who) you want

This is true on multiple levels. First, if you get a stylist whom you like and seems to get you, request her. And do it every time. Crystal was a stylist I really liked and I had for several fixes. I didn’t make a note requesting her on my most recent fix and I got someone new. It felt like going back to square one a bit, which was disappointing. I’m requesting Crystal again in my next fix – fingers crossed!

If you have a brand you like – say the Just Black jeans fit really well and you’d like them in a different color, or the Loveapella dress from the last fix fit like a dream – say so! If you like a brand, ask for more of it.

Be sure to specify if there is an occasion you want help dressing for.

Use the full 3 days and sleep on your decisions

Sleeping on decisions, even minor ones, is usually a good thing.  There’s beauty in having three days to make any decisions. Take full advantage of that time period, something you don’t get when you go shopping in a store. Sometimes items will grow on you, like the plaid scarf that I initially thought was horrid. After a few days I felt better about it, and now it’s one of my favorite items. I just needed time to warm up to it. Conversely, there have been items I’ve loved off the bat that had lost their luster a few days later.

Stitch Fix Review September 2015 http://betweenusparents.com/stitch-fix-review-september-2015/ http://betweenusparents.com/stitch-fix-review-september-2015/#comments Mon, 14 Sep 2015 05:10:56 +0000 http://momfactually.com/?p=2722 If you’re a fan of Parks and Recreation, you remember Tom and Donna loved the phrase “Treat Yo Self.” I decided to take their advice and do just that by scheduling a Stitch Fix box to arrive on my birthday. Happy Stitch Fix to me! It was also a way of helping my husband out because I wasn’t exactly shopping for myself but it would still mean I got something(s) I wanted for my birthday.

So, how’d it go? I got a new stylist this time, Melissa, and she picked some fun items for me. (I’m not sure what happen to Crystal, whom I had for the past several fixes but did not specifically request this time, and so here’s your friendly reminder that if you have a stylist you like, be sure to make an explicit request for her.) Check out the items Melissa selected to fill my request of items that will transition to fall. (And if you’re wondering how Stitch Fix works, scroll to the end of the post.)

Stitch Fix Review September 2015Darcey Heathered Knit Draped Cardigan Stitch Fix

Darcey Heathered Knit Draped Cardigan Stitch Fix This sweater is really soft and cozy. It feels like I should light the fire, make some tea and curl up with a good book while wearing it. Yes, I’m overly eager for autumn. I’m not usually a big fan of heathered items, but that also means I don’t something like it already.

Melissa suggested I pair it with the Bastille Tulip Sleeve Blouse by Papermoon that also came in my fix, so that’s the white shirt in the photo (more on that below) but I was pleased that I had a shirt that matched the reddish/coral color in this shirt and that it would go with white and gray, too. Always good to have more than possible outfits with it. As you can tell, it’s not the most figure-flattering item, but I really liked the little pleats in the back and that it was long enough to cover my bum and thus good for wearing with skinny jeans.

Verdict: Kept

Elisha Zipper Accent Structured Satchel from Urban Expressions

Elisha Zipper Accent Structured Satchel Stitch Fix
I’ve never received a bag from Stitch Fix before, so first time for everything. While I liked this bag, the cute polka dot lining, and the fact that I could fit my laptop inside, I just don’t need one. I was lucky enough to receive a green purse from my mom for my birthday and feel like I have my go-to bag for fall already. Thanks, Mom!

Verdict: Returned

Bowie Solid Dolman Sleeve Top by Laila Jade

Bowie Solid Dolman Sleeve Top Stitch Fix

Random fun fact, because this Mom Factually: The word “dolman” in “dolman sleeves” originates from the Turkish term for “robe.”

I’ve learned from blogging about my Fixes that clothing that feels good on my body doesn’t always look good on camera and that was the case with this top. I wasn’t impressed taking it out of the box, but it was ridiculously comfortable on. Admittedly, the gray isn’t anything to write home about, but I really liked it when paired with a scarf I received in a Fix last fall. I was torn but leaning towards sending it back. My husband saw it on, though, and said he thought it was really cute. If it’s comfy for me and he likes it, I’m inclined to hang on to it and only wear it to non-paparazzi events. Maybe Dolman sleeves are meant to be worn but not seen on film? Random note: I thought it was odd that my stylist didn’t mention this itme in her note. Not a big deal, but usually they hit on each piece and I would have loved to hear her fun styling ideas for a such a very basic piece.

Verdict: Undecided

Bastille Tulip Sleeve Blouse by Papermoon

Bastille Tulip Sleeve Blouse by Papermoon for Stitch Fix

Yes, the tulips sleeves on this top are adorable and made me happy, but they weren’t enough. I didn’t think it did a whole lot for me. This shirt was really see through. Odd that it was so bad in person but not so bad on camera. The tanks I tried to pair underneath never quite looked right, and I have issues with a getting a top that means I have to go buy another top. You can imagine that if it’s that see-through, it’s also really light, and felt summery. I know it’s good for layering, but to be perfectly honest, it didn’t look that different under the sweater than an off white t-shirt I already have. I was looking for pieces that would be a bit more substantial and better for fall weather in the Midwest.

Verdict: Returned

Venita A Line Dress by THML

Venita A Line Dress by THMLMy stylist thought this would be good for summer by itself and fall with layers, and she’s not wrong, but the fit of this dress just didn’t work for me. Between the bloused on top and the high ways, I felt like my top half was all chest and even bigger than it already is (ugh), and it just wasn’t flattering. This is also rather similar to a navy and white dress I received from in my June Fix.

Verdict: Returned

Not a total bust with the comfy cardigan, but not a home run, either. What would you do with the gray top? I love Stitch Fix, but am wondering if perhaps a bit of a break is in order.
