Cyber Monday is half over. These days dedicated to getting your holiday shopping season off to a quick start, but we wouldn’t tackle such a project on an empty stomach. They all happen after we’ve stuffed ourselves silly on Thanksgiving, right? 12299396_10208153044248201_2560845180553261681_n

What I’m most excited about this year, though is #GivingTuesday. It falls on December 1st this year, and is a global day dedicated to giving back. This year, I’m especially excited to be supporting No Kid Hungry.

They set a huge goal of raising $100,000 on Giving Tuesday this year. It’s a lot, but sadly, there are also a lot of hungry kids who really need our help to get the necessary nutrition to grow big, strong, and smart. In fact, up to one in five children struggles with hunger. That means the stakes are high, and I have faith that Team No Kid Hungry can meet their goal.

Every $1 donated to No Kid Hungry can help connect a hungry kid with up to 10 meals, so think of the difference that can make. No Kid Hungry works to ensure that every child in the United States has access to healthy food where they live, where they learn and where they play.

The best part? All donations on Giving Tuesday will be matched by Hickory Farms and Kettle Brand, up to $100k. That means we have the opportunity to raise $200,000 enough to help connect kids with up to 2 million meals – all from one day’s work. With your help, together we can make sure that every kid gets the healthy food they need to succeed, this year and beyond.

If you’d like to help make a big impact on December 1st, join in the conversation online on Giving Tuesday and help spread GivingTuesday_Image_4the word about #GivingTuesday and #NoKidHungry!  And please consider donating on 12/1 at NoKidHungry.org/GivingTuesday.

I’ll be giving, and I hope you’ll join me. Because it’s time to end childhood hunger in America.

Dine Out for No Kid Hungry this September http://betweenusparents.com/dine-out-for-no-kid-hungry-this-september/ http://betweenusparents.com/dine-out-for-no-kid-hungry-this-september/#comments Tue, 08 Sep 2015 12:46:06 +0000 http://momfactually.com/?p=2678 Going out to eat is often a fun treat. It’s a break from the dishes and a chance to connect with family and friends. It gets even better in the month of September, when eating out becomes an opportunity to help fight childhood hunger.

There are 16 million children in America who face food insecurity every day. That is a huge problem. Everyone can become part of the solution simply by dining out with Dine Out for No Kid Hungry.

DineOut_image_thunderclapAll month long, you can find participating dine out restaurants in your area by visiting NoKidHungry.org or by texting “dine” to 877-877.

Bring your family, friends and coworkers to enjoy a meal and special offer from one of the thousands of participating partners. Thousands of participating restaurants are incentivizing customers to help No Kid Hungry through unique promotions. You win from the restaurant’s promotion. The restaurant wins for having you as a customer. And America’s kids win, because you’re helping make No Kid Hungry a reality.

Since its launch in 2008, Dine Out For No Kid Hungry has raised more than $28 million to help end childhood hunger so that every child in the U.S. gets the healthy food they need every day.
Wondering how that money is used? These funds raised are used to do three things:
  1. Connect kids in need to nutritious food where they live, learn and play through programs like school breakfast and summer meals;
  2. Educate and empower low-income families to shop for and cook healthy meals at home on a budget; and
  3. Raise awareness of childhood hunger in America and inspire action in communities across the country.

If you want to do more, please consider supporting No Kid Hungry on social media and help close the breakfast gap by sending
1 million messages to our country’s leaders about the importance of school breakfast.

So get on out there to some yummy restaurants and do your part! Bon appetit, friends!

No Kid Hungry: How you can help end childhood hunger http://betweenusparents.com/no-kid-hungry/ http://betweenusparents.com/no-kid-hungry/#comments Thu, 04 Sep 2014 01:55:34 +0000 http://momfactually.com/?p=572 Can you imagine not knowing how you’re going to pay for food for dinner for your family tonight? Sadly, millions of Americans face that issue on a daily basis, and a startling 20 percent of our children face hunger.

Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign urges Americans to take action and end childhood hunger in America. With the slogan “End it with Orange,” it joins other food pantries and programs working to end hunger across the country in the hope that the bold color orange will draw attention to the problem and highlight the fact that September is Hunger Action Month.  Action is certainly needed on hunger based on the USDA’s recently released data on food insecurity in the United States.

* 14.3% of American households are unable to consistently provide enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle for all of its members;

* 16 million children, or one out of five, lived in families financially struggling to put food on the table; and

* 10.6 million kids who are eligible for free or reduced-price school breakfast do not get it, according to the Food Research and Action Center, School Breakfast Scorecard.

The idea that twenty percent of our children have parents who worry about feeding them is unacceptable.

So what can we do to end childhood hunger?

This is perhaps a bit ironic, but we can eat. Seriously.

This September, you can help end childhood hunger in America by dining out for No Kid Hungry. More than 7,500 restaurants across the nation are participating. Not only are they helping, you can donate and take advantage of promotions and rewards in return for doing good. It’s a win-win!

Click here to enter your zip code and see which restaurants near you are getting in on the act.

A second thing you can do is donate money. Just $1 can put food on the table for a child. In fact, a dollar can provide up to 10 meals for a kid. You can donate at the No Kid Hungry website here.

A third way to help is to enter this Tork sweepstakes for your chance to win a prize package for two to the 2014 Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival October 16 – 19, 2014. For each entry, Tork will donate to No Kid Hungry, up to 150,000 meals. That’s a lot of happy tummies.

A fourth way to do something is to raise awareness. That means talking. Share your experience with your social network, follow @NoKidHungry on Facebook and Twitter, and join the conversation.

While it’s tough, it’s also important to talk to your kids about the fact that there are hungry children in our country. There’s a website just for kids and families. It explains why food is so important for our kids, has some awesome examples of kids making a difference in their communities and offer ideas for kids who want to get involved and take action. I love that it offers both great role models and empowerment for our kids.
