However, he didn’t let that crash stop him from finishing the race. He walked back up the hill to where he fell and finished the race as the crowd went wild.

Check out the amazing video:

The best part of the story, in my mind, is the reason Kelley, age 26, gave for why he hiked back up the hill.

“My parents told me to never give up, so I wanted to cross that finish line,” Kelley said in comments relayed by the U.S. Ski Team and included in this NPR article.

Turns out that kids do sometimes listen! Cue the rejoicing from parents everywhere.

Huge props to Robby Kelley and huge props, too, to his parents who have obviously instilled a great amount of determination and perseverance in their son.

This is a wonderful video to share with kids (and all ages, really) to be reminded that finishing strong matters, and can be accomplished in a variety of ways.

I love his positivity and sense of humor, as evidenced in his Instagram post:

Kelley may not have won the race, but he won an enormous amount of admiration and respect.

It’s also safe to say that Kelley won over a legion of new fans who will be cheering him on in the rest of the World Cup races this year and hopefully at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. They start just 381 days from now!

As Winston Churchill once said, “Never, never, never give up.”
