Late last night we returned from a most fabulous trip to Disney World, hence why things have been a little quiet around here. But we’re back, and I’m ready to blog, baby! It’s possible that sounded more energetic than I actually feel, but fake it til you make it, I always say.
This morning meant unpacking, hoping those mountains of laundry would do themselves and missing the chipmunks in the shower. I know, I never thought I’d ever type that last phrase ever, but it’s true, there were tiles of Chip and Dale in our shower at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and they were adorable.
(And bonus points if you can find the Hidden Mickey!)
I may have a special place in my heart for my woodland friends here because we had the best time at a character meal with Chip and Dale. Dale danced with my daughter and does a mean version of the sprinkler which delighted all of us but I think it was my husband who laughed the hardest. Later Chip snuck up behind him and my daughter was the one who got the giggles. You can see the less than professional video here:
Seeing my daughter and her bonus dad, my husband, laugh together made me so happy. And when my poor girl got sick in the middle of the park, he was the first one to comfort her. Nope, it wasn’t me, I admit it. I bolted to get help cleaning up, but I knew I could do so because he has the dad thing under control.
More than once on the trip I thought about how very lucky I was to have him. I was thinking about all that this morning when I saw this Pre-Super Bowl ad on television for Dove.
Isn’t it the sweetest?
Wait, don’t answer that because there may be one that’s even sweeter. There are at least two pre-Super Bowl commercials about dads this year, because this one from Toyota featuring LaVar Arrington, Kurt Warner and Fred Jackson talking about their fathers and what their kids say about them as dads is also pretty great.
“Being a dad doesn’t have anything to do with blood. It’s not biological. It’s about a choice that you make to love your children,” says Kurt Warner at the 2.30 mark. Kurt Warner married a woman who had a special needs child from a previous relationship.
That line made a big impact on me. It is hugely important.
“It’s about a choice that you make to love your children.”
My husband is not my daughter’s biological father, but he is definitely a dad to her. He is a dad to her because he has chosen to be. He has chosen to love her, and he does so with all his heart.
After my husband saw the first commercial, we were both feeling a bit wistful that he missed the early years of our girl’s life, but that second ad reminded me that what matters is that he is here now, that he has been here for four plus years (we remembered on the trip that we got engaged four years ago this weekend), and that he’s not going anywhere.
My husband’s incredible choice to be there for the ups and down, the silly times with Chip and Dale and the sick times and everything in between, leaves me humbled every single day.
He loves us, and what an incredible choice that is.
